The Matrix

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te6qG4yn-Ps&feature=related

^ This is the blue pill or red pill scene. A close up is used of Morpheus as we enter the room with Neo, for the seconds that we are still in close up the silence kills me as his facial expressions aren't obvious of what he's thinking and feeling; and you just want to know what he's about to do. After they've entered an over-the-shoulder shot is used to introduce Morpheus and to show his importance of which isn't yet revealed. The lighting in the room is really dim with just background lamps used; I think this creates a serious atmosphere which I think is important for creating mystery and uncertainty of why Neo is being introduced to Morpheus. When they first speak and shake hands over-the-shoulder shots are used to show their reactions and impressions of each other, which I think is imperative as Neo has no real idea of why he is there. When Morpheus talks you don't feel threatened by him however he doesn't come across as a 'jokey' character because of his role and status, but a very pronounced and serious character making you unsure what to think of him by first impressions especially for Neo.

When they sit down and get into conversation about The Matrix, reaction shots are used a lot so that you really gain entry into their discussion. When they are talking Neo looks anxious when Morpheus asks him whether he wants to know what The Matrix, which could make him feel nervous about what knowing about it could involve and whether he wants to be involved in it. As Morpheus reveals of what The Matrix is about Neo listens and starts to become more curious and begins to trust the whole situation much more as they learn forward in their chairs and discuss further. You then get a close up of both hands but he reveals the red pill and explains the consequences of this pill also, once again with an extreme close up of his face afterwards. As Morpheus sits with both of his hands open waiting for Neo to make his decision,

As Morpheus says 'this is your last chance after this there is no turning back' soft music begins to play to set atmosphere and tension of what is about to be asked of Neo. You then get another reaction shot of Neo and he looks taken back and begins to lean back into his chair again more wondering what to do and the music suddenly gets a lot louder. You immediately get a close up of Morpheus' hand with the blue pill in it and he explains about what happens when you take the blue pill, and then you get an extreme close up of his face and you can see Neo's reflection in them (ask caroline about this shot). You then get an over the shoulder shot showing Neo hesitating on which pill to choose, and again the clever shot used of Neo's reflection in Morpheus' glasses and you can see both pills and Neo's hand hovering over the red pill, and then him picking it up. Eerie music is playing at he places it into his mouth and takes the glass of water and you can suddenly hear lightening in the background as he drinks the water making you feel anxious of whether he chose the right pill or not; Morpheus then says 'follow me'.

City of God

City of God had me hooked from start to finish, the way the camera manipulates the audience in such a clever way I find incredible. To start with the title 'City of God' is ironic as the characters in the film are far from safety in God's hands, and God plays no presence in the entire film. The brutal reality of the characters lives reflects on how the criminal image and status is just the normal way of life. At the beginning of the film the music used is diegetic and the fast cuts used makes you feel confused and anxious of where the knife is, and unaware of your surroundings making you feel involved.

As the film unfolds we are revealed and let into the lives of the characters and I really empathise with the children knowing the things they have to do like drug dealing purely to survive allowing their families to live; to put bluntly if you don't get involved in the towns drug industry and earn respect from the main leaders than you have little hope surviving. In the case of the children looks are definitely deceiving in this case as the children are just as violent as the adults and you shouldn't under estimate this for a minute, just like the adults they are also killed without much consideration for their age as this doesn't matter in their eyes.

I find this film completely unique and so different, but yet so realistic of that culture and it really brings home how life is for some people in different cultures and makes you realise what life could be really like. The main focus for me in the film is the children and how they are so grown up before their time, having to fend for themselves and the parent role does not even come into the picture. The worst part of the film is when the two children are being mouthed off by Lil Ze and one of them has to be shot in the hand or foot and the other has to be shot to be killed, this decision has to be made by (one of the newest gang members who agreed to be in Lil Ze's gang through peer pressure who I can't remember the name of). You can tell by his facial expressions that he doesn't want to choose but he eventually does and his face is distraught once it happens. Lil Ze then makes the other child walk off after he's just been shot in the foot, shouting at him not to limp which I find really sad as he is clearly in agonizing pain and finds it incredibly hard not to. In my opinion this film is an inspirational success in making me feel completely emotional involved in it, I share the emotions with all the characters and often find myself feeling frustrated, confused, upset, happy and much more; which I find unbelievable that a film could do this to me which I never thought it could.

Elephant

I found this film completely hard to grasp and I would never have guessed the outcome of it. However one of the main types of shot used in this film is the tracking shot, this is used quite a few times throughout the film and despite me not liking the film I thought it gave it a really good atmosphere. I wasn't quite sure of why tracking shots were used a lot at first but then realised following John was a clear significant part of the film, and made me anticipate what he was going to do next as you weren't sure of this; but at the same time made me feel more and more involved. The part of the film that really confused me was the part when people were walking up the corridor and started taking pictures (of what I can remember) and this repeated itself several times which I really do not understand the concept or relevance of it, which put me off concentrating on the film for a while.

I felt that the use of the camera shots were clever and manipulating for specific and relevant reasons however I find the film hard to understand which is why I'm struggling to write things about it! For the way I feel about the film I really did not like it and found the ending annoying because I wanted to know whether to two people got shot or what happened to them which I found ruined it for me because I hate being held in suspense especially when you will never know what's going to happen.

Sound in Film

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB0vWuGc7cQ

In my opinion music makes a film, it has the ability change your feelings to the correct emotion which I find incredibly clever and my chosen film to show this is Pinocchio. Although this is a Disney film with a certificate 'U' and aimed for children I can't help but love this film one of the main is because of the music and sound used to create emotion and atmosphere. In the first part of the clip where they have provoked the whale in order to get free the music used when they get out of inside it, the music is rapidly building up to a climax and makes you feel really on edge and you wish they would hurry and escape. When Geppetto (Pinocchio's Dad) is washed up on the shore to safety the music is immediately calmer and gives a sense of relief that he is out of harms way and you can just hear the gentle sound of the waves, you then see the cat and the goldfish wash up on shore shortly after, the music then becomes slow and depressing as Geppetto begins to breathe heavily and call out to Pinocchio to save himself. As Jiminy Cricket looks around to find Pinocchio, calling his name his face then goes into shock as you then see a shot of Pinocchio with his face with in a puddle and the music suddenly play orchestra music loudly which then puts us into shock and despair to whether he's alive or not, sharing Jiminy's emotions and that image slowly fades out and then fades into Pinocchio lying down dead. The camera zooms out to show Geppetto knelt down by the bed side crying with sad upsetting music playing, the camera then shows Jiminy, the cat and the goldfish's faces up close revealing their current emotions; they are all distressed and crying and with the music added on top of this you can't help but feel how they do. The best part of the film without a doubt is when Pinocchio is brought back to life by the fairy and Geppetto makes a celebration and plays all the clocks and music, then Jiminy goes outside the window to thank the fairy and gets rewarded with an 'official conscience' medal and Jiminy looks so happy and pleased aw he's so cute! Then my favourite song is played at the end to draw the film to a close 'when your heart is in your dream, no request is too extreme, oh when you wish upon a star, your dreams come true', I love these lyrics and think it's a very nice way to end the film. I found it quite embarrasing at first choosing this film for my film work but I love it and you're never too old for Pinocchio!! ...and all other Disney films lol.

Cinematography work

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsMjHBhVDko

^^ This is the link to my chosen film Bridget Jones' Diary, I didn't know how to put the images in, I tried print screening the images and then adding them in but it wouldn't let me so I'll just tell you when to pause the clip.

  • For the first shot if you pause it at 1:53 you will see a point of view shot, with this you can see how the entire dinner table stops eating to stare uncomfortably at Bridget. I find this really effective because you can feel her embarrassment and discomfort as she hesitates awkwardly to answer the needless question

  • For the second shot at 1:55 you get Bridget's reaction shot revealing her shock and mortification at the question asked by them and right at this moment you completely feel her pain

  • For the third shot at 2:30 you get an Over-the-Shoulder shot, as Mark walks down the stairs talking as he begins to speak first it shows an over the shoulder shot, possibly showing importance.

  • For the forth shot at 6:15 it is another over the shoulder shot but is as well a close up shot, and this shows the concentration in her bosses face, showing importance about what he's saying; which draws the audience into that specific shot delivering impact.

This film is definitely one of my favourites I absolutely love it and have watched it at least 50 times! I think it's really good at varying different shots appropriately and not insignificantly, to keep the audience interested with variety.
